Welcome to Cuelia Therapy & Coaching

Counselling / Psychotherapy

Therapy is not intended to impose solutions, but rather to offer a space where individuals can be heard, receive validation, and discover their own approaches to challenges within a safe and confidential environment. The therapeutic process encourages exploration of personal experiences without judgment and aims to support individual empowerment.

Through therapy, individuals can examine their own behavioural patterns and mental processes, including identifying influences, triggers, defence mechanisms, and self-critical thoughts that may impact self-esteem and personal development. Gaining awareness of these patterns—many of which are rooted in subconscious beliefs—can contribute to making meaningful changes and addressing symptoms such as anxiety or depression. Some changes achieved through therapy may develop gradually over time as individuals understand aspects of themselves previously unrecognized or underdeveloped.

Beliefs and values are often shaped early in life and stored subconsciously. These may originate from caregivers, community members, educators, cultural influences, and other significant figures, as well as from personal experiences. Some beliefs may have developed as adaptive responses to challenging circumstances at an earlier stage, reflecting the mind's effort to manage difficulties when typical coping skills were less accessible.  As an Integrative Therapist, I draw upon a range of theoretical approaches, interventions, and psychoeducational strategies to effectively address your individual needs and goals.

Specialism in working with ADHD

ADHD is regarded by some experts as a framework for describing executive functioning impairments rather than merely a diagnostic label. Recognition of the variability in these impairments is essential; differences in presence, severity, gender, age, and the impact of personal experiences, including trauma, can all significantly affect cognitive processing..

ADHD is diagnosed when there are consistent, significant challenges in areas like emotional regulation, rejection sensitivity, working memory, focus, decision-making, dopamine management, impulse control, time awareness, social cues, relationships, and hyperactivity / stimming. The UK classifies ADHD as Predominantly Inattentive, Predominantly Hyperactive, or Combined, with differences across age and gender. Recent research suggests hormonal imbalances may influence ADHD, especially during puberty (Kings College, London).

With extensive experience supporting individuals with ADHD, I help clients understand their traits and harness their strengths for greater fulfilment. I also advocate for better education about ADHD as missed diagnoses can lead to ongoing mental health issues in adulthood, such as low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety. Increasingly, people with an existing diagnosis may also identify with autism (or vice versa), so it is important to consider this when assessing individual presentations.

Ultimately, the goal is to empower people to work with their unique minds, embrace authenticity, avoid being defined by external expectations and pursue a life defined by personal strengths.

Inner Child therapy

Inner child therapy is a gentle therapeutic approach that aims to help individuals explore and reconnect with aspects of themselves shaped by early life experiences, which may continue to influence their thoughts and behaviours. When reflecting on childhood experiences, adults do so with developed emotional intelligence and rational thinking, whereas, as children, they may have faced challenges in identifying or processing emotions, sometimes resulting in coping mechanisms such as suppression. This can lead to unresolved psychological issues that affect behaviour later in life. Engaging with our inner child can provide an opportunity to acknowledge and validate past experiences, understand unmet needs, and increase self-awareness of ongoing influences. This process can help to change those beliefs formed during childhood that are holding us back or contributing to low esteem.

Building on this foundation of self-understanding, embracing both present strengths and past vulnerabilities encourages a deeper sense of self-compassion and authenticity. As we cultivate the capacity to observe our internal processes without judgment, we open pathways to new patterns of resilience and adaptability. Recognising the impact of formative experiences allows us to gently dismantle self-limiting beliefs, making space for growth that honours our individuality. Ultimately, the journey towards integration is not about erasing difficulties or denying imperfections, but rather about fostering acceptance, nurturing the whole self, and finding empowerment in our unique stories. This holistic approach equips us to navigate life’s challenges more confidently, aligning our actions with our values and enabling us to move forward with greater clarity and purpose.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is defined as a state of focused attention, rather than unconsciousness. While in hypnosis, individuals typically remain aware of their surroundings and maintain control, experiencing a relaxed and concentrated state. Hypnotherapy is recognised as a practice distinct from stage hypnosis; the latter often involves participants engaging in behaviours for entertainment purposes. A hypnotic state may be compared to the experience of being deeply absorbed in a daydream, book, or film, where awareness of external events persists but the primary focus is on a particular subject. Following an initial consultation, hypnotherapy sessions generally include a hypnotic induction to facilitate relaxation, along with suggestions intended to support changes in behaviour or thought patterns. During this state of relaxation, individuals may be more receptive to positive suggestions related to health, well-being, or specific behaviours they wish to address.

Therapeutic Coaching

Coaching is a collaborative partnership designed to identify objectives and achieve personal or professional goals by constructing effective solutions that foster positive growth and unlock potential. Through the application of coaching techniques—such as thought-provoking dialogue, empowerment strategies, and creative processes—clients are encouraged to maintain progress toward their aspirations. In my capacity as a psychotherapist, I further enhance this work by exploring subconscious conditioning, addressing limiting core beliefs, and identifying emotional barriers that may impede development.

Couples/Relationship therapy

Relationship therapy provides a supportive, mediative, impartial, and respectful environment for romantic partners, family members, or close friends. This form of counselling aims to help participants understand the dynamics influencing their relationship and develop effective solutions to address challenges such as:

·      Communication difficulties

·      Relationship repair and restoration

·      Unmet individual needs and expectations

·      Conflict resolution

·      Gaining insight into patterns and behaviours

My approach to couples therapy begins with an individual session for each participant, allowing for open discussion of goals and concerns. Following these initial sessions, joint sessions are conducted to work collaboratively toward positive outcomes for the relationship.

So why Cuelia?

The name Cuelia carries deep personal significance from my childhood and a heartfelt bond with my late sister, Dawn. Starting my own business, inspired by the need to heal after her loss, gave me a sense of purpose in helping others.

For years, I tied my self-worth to academic achievements and professional success, influenced by early experiences and societal expectations. Although I had a thriving career as a Systems Engineer, I grappled with imposter syndrome and low confidence. My sister's passing made me re-evaluate these beliefs, realizing true fulfilment wasn’t in the corporate IT world.

Chasing happiness, I shifted gears, earning qualifications in complementary therapies and mental health, including Reiki, Reflexology, Hypnotherapy, Counselling, and Psychotherapy. The counselling process was life-changing, helping me break free from deep-seated limiting beliefs formed in childhood.

By addressing suppressed emotions and embracing inner child work, I found a sense of authenticity and inner value. Having healed from various traumas, I now support others with empathy and understanding as a "wounded healer."
